Young artist honored for work to raise funds for Daystar

The Association of Fundraising Professionals recently awarded its Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award to 8-year-old Maia Bastianelli for her work on behalf of Daystar for Medically Fragile Children. A prolific artist, Maia has raised more than $16,000 for Daystar through the sale of note cards created from her original paintings.

Maia came up with the idea of creating and selling the note cards because she wanted to help the children who receive therapeutic and pediatric nursing services and who participate in early childhood and special education programs at Daystar, a day respite center for infants and young children with serious and life-threatening medical conditions. More than 50 percent of Daystar’s budget comes from community support and philanthropy, so the funds Maia raised are invaluable to the center’s mission, according to Kim Condon, Daystar’s executive director.

“Maia reminds us that we all have the power to change lives when we harness our passion and ideas for good,” Condon said. “Maia is remarkable. She’s young, she’s gifted and she cares deeply about what happens in our community. She didn’t ignore her heart. She came up with an idea and she took it to the next level.”

Maia’s note cards may be purchased online at www.daystarkids.org or www.madebymaia.com.
